Oregon Car Insurance Requirements: What Drivers Need to Know

Navigating state car insurance laws can feel overwhelming, but Oregon keeps its core driver requirements straightforward. Whether you are registering a vehicle or transferring your license to the Beaver State, Oregon law mandates that every motor vehicle operator carry a minimum baseline of auto insurance. Operating a vehicle without meeting these standards can lead to severe penalties, including license suspension, hefty fines, and required SR-22 filings.

Oregon is one of a few states requiring a three-part mandatory coverage package: Liability Insurance, Personal Injury Protection (PIP), and Uninsured Motorist coverage.

1. Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability

Liability insurance pays for damage or injuries you cause to others in an accident. Oregon establishes minimum liability thresholds known as 25/50/20 limits:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury or death to a single person in an accident.

  • $50,000 total for bodily injury or death per crash involving multiple people.

  • $20,000 for property damage per crash (such as repairs to another driver’s vehicle, guardrails, or structures).

2. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Oregon is a no-fault state specifically regarding immediate medical coverage. Oregon drivers are required to carry a minimum of $15,000 in Personal Injury Protection (PIP) per person.

Regardless of who caused the collision, PIP steps in to cover “reasonable and necessary” expenses incurred within two years of the accident. This includes medical treatments, up to 70% of lost wages (if disabled for more than 14 consecutive days), essential household service assistance, and funeral expenses.

3. Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM)

To protect law-abiding drivers from those operating illegally without coverage, Oregon mandates Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage. The state minimums match the standard bodily injury limits:

  • $25,000 per person.

  • $50,000 total per accident.

This coverage reimburses you and your passengers for medical bills and injury-related damages if you are struck by a hit-and-run driver or an uninsured motorist.

Coverage Type Mandatory Minimum Requirement What It Protects
Bodily Injury Liability $25,000 / $50,000 Injuries you cause to other people
Property Damage Liability $20,000 Property/vehicle damage you cause to others
Personal Injury Protection (PIP) $15,000 Medical bills and wage loss for you/passengers (no-fault)
Uninsured Motorist (UM) $25,000 / $50,000 Bodily injury caused by uninsured or hit-and-run drivers

Recommended Optional Coverages

While the state requires minimums, they rarely cover the costs of major multi-vehicle crashes or high-end repairs. Lenders typically require additional protections, and drivers often add:

  • Collision Coverage: Pays for physical damage to your own car following an impact with another vehicle or object, regardless of fault.

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Covers non-collision incidents such as auto theft, fallen tree branches, vandalism, extreme weather, or hitting wildlife.

  • Underinsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD): Reimburses vehicle repairs if an underinsured driver damages your car, as mandatory UM in Oregon only covers physical injuries.

Carrying proof of active policy coverage is mandatory whenever driving on public roads or registering a vehicle with the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). Maintaining these basic minimums keeps you compliant with state laws and protects your personal finances on the road.
