Does Auto Insurance Cover Medical Expenses?

After an accident, drivers and passengers often wonder if car insurance will cover medical expenses. Coverage depends on your policy, state, and the situation. Knowing how insurance works with medical bills helps you avoid surprises.

1. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Many states require Personal Injury Protection (PIP), especially those with no-fault laws. PIP pays medical expenses for you and your passengers, no matter who caused the crash. It can also cover some lost wages and rehabilitation costs, providing broad medical coverage.
If you live in a no-fault state and are injured, PIP pays your medical bills up to your policy’s limit before health insurance or other coverage applies.

2. Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay)

Where PIP is not required, you may add Medical Payments Coverage (MedPay). Like PIP, MedPay covers medical expenses for you and passengers regardless of fault but is more limited. MedPay typically covers only medical and funeral expenses, not lost wages or rehabilitation.
MedPay is particularly useful for covering health insurance deductibles and co-pays, or for drivers who do not have health insurance.

3. Liability Coverage and Medical Bills

All states require liability insurance for injuries and damages you cause. But liability coverage does not pay your medical expenses. If you’re at fault, you pay the other party’s medical bills. You need PIP, MedPay, or health insurance for your own costs.

4. Health Insurance and Auto Accidents

If PIP or MedPay limits are exhausted, health insurance may cover additional medical costs. Coordination between auto and health insurance differs by state and insurer. Some health insurers may require reimbursement after a settlement has been reached.

5. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

If you’re hurt by a driver with too little insurance, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage can help pay medical expenses, lost wages, and related costs, depending on your state and policy.
